Smart Moms, Smart Farms: The Digital Transformation of Agriculture

Women farmers in Northern Ghana are combining traditional agricultural knowledge with digital tools to improve productivity, strengthen climate resilience, and make informed farming decisions. Through the DARE Smart Mom Project, technology is empowering women to embrace precision farming and build more sustainable livelihoods.

From Experience to Precision: How Smart Farming is Transforming Women's Agriculture in Northern Ghana

For generations, women farmers have relied on experience, observation, and indigenous knowledge to grow food and sustain their families. These traditional methods remain valuable, but today's agricultural challenges demand new tools and new approaches.

At the DARE Smart Mom Project, implemented by DivaFam with support from UNESCO and The Mastercard Foundation, women farmers are embracing technology to complement their existing knowledge and improve decision-making on their farms.

Across our demonstration farms, women are now using digital tablets to access agricultural information, record farm activities, monitor crop performance, and identify plant health issues before they become major problems. What was once managed through memory and paper notes is increasingly supported by real-time data and digital tools.

This shift represents a move from traditional farming practices alone to precision farming; an approach that uses information and technology to make farming more efficient, productive, and resilient.

With digital record-keeping, farmers can track planting dates, input usage, yields, and expenses more accurately. Plant diagnosis applications help identify crop diseases and nutrient deficiencies early, allowing farmers to take timely action and reduce losses. Access to agricultural advisory services through digital platforms enables women to make informed decisions based on evidence rather than guesswork.

Technology is not replacing farmers knowledge. Instead, it is strengthening it.

The women participating in the DARE Smart Mom Project combine generations of farming wisdom with modern agricultural innovations. By doing so, they are improving productivity, increasing income opportunities, and building climate resilience in their communities.

As agriculture continues to evolve, digital literacy is becoming just as important as traditional farming skills. Through practical training and hands-on learning, the DARE Smart Mom Project is ensuring that women are not left behind in this transformation.

The future of farming is smart, data-driven, and inclusive. Most importantly, it is being shaped by women who are proving every day that technology can be a powerful tool for empowerment, sustainability, and food security.

At Diva Fam, we believe that when women farmers are equipped with the right knowledge, tools, and opportunities, they do more than grow crops, they cultivate stronger families, stronger communities, and a stronger future.
