How DivaFam is rewriting the story of rural motherhood-one vegetable farm, one rabbit hutch, and one digital skill at a time.

There is a quiet revolution happening in the dusty, sun-soaked landscapes of Gushegu Municipality. It doesn't make headlines. It won't trend on social media. But in the homes of 400 young mothers, something extraordinary is taking root.
They are no longer waiting to be saved. They are building.
Welcome to SMART MOM-DivaFam's flagship climate-smart agricultural empowerment initiative, implemented under the prestigious UNESCO Digital Access and Rural Empowerment (DARE) Program. This is not charity. This is transformation. This is what happens when you stop seeing young mothers as vulnerable and start equipping them as powerful economic actors.

The Problem We Refuse to Ignore. In Northern Ghana, young mothers face an impossible equation: No childcare + No capital + No skills + No market access = No opportunity.
They are caught in a cycle raising children in communities where climate change is drying up traditional farming, where financial systems don't recognize their worth, and where being a young mother often means being economically invisible.

But here's what we know at DivaFam: Poverty is not a lack of character. It is a lack of access.

SMART MOM is our answer. It is a holistic, women-centered economic empowerment program designed to dismantle the barriers every single one of them that stand between a young mother and her ability to thrive.

What is SMART MOM?

SMART MOM is a 06-month intensive empowerment program that transforms young mothers into skilled agri-entrepreneurs, cooperative leaders, and digitally literate business women. It is built on the understanding that sustainable livelihoods for women require more than training-they require systems.

Our Four Pillars of Transformation:

  1. Irrigation-Based Vegetable Farming: Year-round income through climate-resilient, dry-season vegetable production using drip irrigation technology.
  2. Commercial Rabbit Production: A low-cost, high-yield protein source that provides both household nutrition and market income.
  3. Financial Literacy & Enterprise Training: Practical skills in savings, budgeting, pricing, and business planning to build financial independence.
  4. Digital Inclusion & Market Linkages: Training in mobile money, digital marketplaces, and cooperative management systems to connect rural producers to urban buyers.

But we didn't stop there

We know that a mother cannot attend training if her child is unattended. So we built community-based childcare systems-run by trained local women-so that no mother has to choose between her child and her future.

We know that skills without support fade. So we integrated mentorship and peer support networks, pairing each participant with experienced women leaders who guide them through the journey.
This is not a workshop. This is an ecosystem.

Why Climate-Smart Agriculture?
Northern Ghana is on the frontlines of the climate crisis. Rainfall is increasingly erratic. Traditional rain-fed farming is failing. Food insecurity is rising.

SMART MOM responds with climate-resilient solutions:

  1. Drip irrigation systems that reduce water usage by up to 60% while enabling year-round vegetable production.
  2. Rabbit farming a low-emission, land-efficient protein source that thrives in dry climates.
  3. Sustainable land management practices that protect soil health and reduce environmental degradation.

We are not just empowering women. We are building climate-resilient food systems led by the very communities most affected by climate change.

The SMART MOM Impact: More Than Numbers

When this program concludes, 400 young mothers in Gushegu will not just have completed a trainingThey will have:

  1. Established income-generating vegetable farms that feed their families and supply local markets.
Launched rabbit production enterprises that diversify their income and improve household nutrition.
  2. Opened and actively managed mobile money accounts, giving them access to formal financial systems many for the first time.
  3. Formed and registered women-led agricultural cooperatives, creating collective bargaining power and shared resources.
  4. Developed business plans and market linkages that connect their products to buyers beyond their villages.

But the ripple effects go further.
Children will eat better. Household incomes will rise. Girls will stay in school because their mothers can now afford fees. Communities will see that investing in young mothers is the smartest economic decision they can make.

Why DivaFam? & Why Now?
At DivaFam, we believe that women are not the problem to be solved, they are the solution to be unleashed. For years, development programs have treated young mothers in rural Africa as passive recipients of aid. SMART MOM flips that narrative.
We see these 400 women as:

  1. Future cooperative leaders who will train the next generation.
  2. Climate champions who will steward sustainable farming practices.
  3. Economic anchors who will reinvest their earnings into their families and communities.
  4. Digital pioneers who will bridge the rural-urban technology divide.

The UNESCO DARE Program entrusted us with this mission because they know what we know:
When you empower a young mother, you don't just change her life. You change the trajectory of an entire community.

This is SMART MOM.
This is DivaFam.
This is just the beginning.
